about

Ventura, Calif.–based Seth Pettersen has a knack for bottling West Coast vibes, shaking them up, and popping the top. His 2012 album Natural Machine plays like a sibling to releases by similarly sunny acts like The Allah-Las, Wavves, Beachwood Sparks, and Franklin for Short (a band Pettersen also fronts). “Breaking Points” opens with instantaneously catchy melodies, as the reedy tenor’s voice duck-dives under pumping sets of glassy reverb while guitars chime in time with a propulsive, tambourine-punctuated rhythm section. This is followed by “Eye Know You,” an indiefied folk-rock gem that bounces on the kind of acoustic guitar strumming that would sound perfect around an evening campfire on the beach. Bombastic drumming, twangy guitars, analog keyboards, and Wilson brothers–inspired singing combine to give “Soul Arcade” a retro Beach Boys feel, before “Big Rip” gets loud with some bygone garage-rock crunch. The energetic “Get Rad” sounds tailor-made to accompany pumping giant concrete waves at the neighborhood skatepark. Even moodier songs like the slightly sullen “The Nothing” sparkle through those minor chords with shimmering guitar tones. - iTunes
